SPORTS DESK — WEEKLY LEDGER
April 10, 2026 Games played April 3–April 10, 2026
Spring arrived on the schedule this week. Baseball and softball opened their seasons, lacrosse rosters filled the scoreboards, and at the college level, a pair of Fairfield University programs found themselves in pivotal conference positions with the back half of the regular season beginning.
LEAD — Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse Fairfield 12, Mount St. Mary's 4 — Wednesday, April 8
In a game that carried real MAAC title implications, Fairfield University women's lacrosse defeated Mount St. Mary's 12-4 on April 8 at Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium, eliminating the Mountaineers as the last undefeated MAAC team capable of matching the Stags' conference record. Fairfield moved to 6-0 in conference play and 11-3 overall with the result. Kelly Haggerty recorded a hat trick that included her 100th career goal, becoming the 18th Stag to reach that milestone. Haley Burns added a goal and four draw controls. The Mount, who had been averaging 16 goals per game in MAAC action and had scored double digits in 11 of their previous 13 games, were held to a season-low four goals. Fairfield now stands alone at the top of the MAAC, with only Niagara — whom the Stags do not face in the regular season — also unbeaten in conference play.
HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP
Spring sports opened the week of April 3–4 with the annual SCC-FCIAC Challenge, and Fairfield-area programs mixed results across baseball and softball on opening day. Fairfield Ludlowe dropped a 2-1 decision to Foran in baseball and a 4-1 loss to Sheehan in softball on Saturday, April 4. Fairfield Warde lost to Lyman Hall 10-4 in baseball on the same date; Warde's softball side fell to Jonathan Law 13-1. Notre Dame–Fairfield dropped a 3-0 baseball decision to St. Joseph on April 4. No score was confirmed for Fairfield Prep's April 4 scheduled game at Trumbull; the result was not published by FCIAC within this coverage window.
Play continued April 6–9 and produced several verified results. In baseball, Fairfield Warde defeated Norwalk 3-1 on April 6, and Fairfield Ludlowe beat Maloney 9-5 on April 8, then topped Joel Barlow 7-2 on April 9. In softball, Fairfield Ludlowe routed Wright Tech 19-1 on April 8, while Norwalk defeated Notre Dame–Fairfield 1-0 on April 7. Fairfield Warde fell to Newtown 11-5 in softball on April 7.
In boys lacrosse, Darien defeated Fairfield Warde 21-0 on April 7 — a one-sided result that reflected the gap between one of the state's perennial powers and an early-season opponent. Fairfield Ludlowe won a tighter contest, beating Kellenberg Memorial (NY) 9-7 on April 7. On April 9, Fairfield Warde rebounded with an 18-1 win over Norwalk, while St. Joseph edged Fairfield Ludlowe 8-7 in boys lacrosse on the same date. In girls lacrosse, Fairfield Ludlowe posted an 18-1 win over Westhill on April 7, then followed with a 17-4 defeat of St. Joseph on April 9, with Hayden Anderson recording four goals and an assist in that contest.
Verified varsity results for Fairfield Prep in baseball, and for all four Fairfield programs in boys and girls lacrosse beyond those specifically noted above, were not consistently published by CIAC, FCIAC, or official school athletic sites across the full coverage window.
In college play this week, both of Fairfield University's men's programs faced meaningful tests.
COLLEGE ROUNDUP
Fairfield University baseball claimed a series victory at Merrimack over the April 2–4 road trip, going 2-1 in the three-game MAAC set. The decisive win came April 4, a 7-6 comeback in which the Stags scored four times in the eighth inning to take the lead. Connor Scanlan, Nolan Colby, and TJ Schmalzle all drove in runs during that frame, with Colby finishing with three hits on the day. Jack Sheldon earned the win in relief and Ryan Maiorano secured his sixth save of the season. With the series result, Fairfield moved to 9-3 in MAAC play. The Stags open a home series against Rider beginning April 10 sitting three games behind Rider (12-3 MAAC) in the conference standings — the most consequential series remaining for a defending MAAC champion trying to reclaim the top seed. The Army West Point midweek game scheduled for April 7 was canceled.
Fairfield University men's lacrosse dropped a 13-6 CAA decision at Hofstra on April 4, falling to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Rob Moore scored two goals to lead Fairfield's offense. The Stags host Holy Cross on April 11 in a non-conference game before returning to CAA play with a home date against defending conference champion Towson on April 18.
What the Ledger Shows
- Fairfield University women's lacrosse is 6-0 in the MAAC and 11-3 overall, the lone program in the conference with a clear path to the top seed at the MAAC Championship. Kelly Haggerty's 100th career goal arrived at a moment that mattered.
- The Fairfield University baseball program enters its home series against Rider at 9-3 in the MAAC, three games behind the Broncs with the back end of the season beginning — the most consequential stretch remaining for a team that won last year's conference title.
- High school spring sports are in their first week of results. Early returns are mixed across Fairfield programs in baseball, softball, and lacrosse, and the season is too young for standing patterns to emerge.
What to Watch
- April 10–12: Fairfield University baseball hosts Rider in a three-game MAAC series at Cook Field. Rider enters at 12-3 in the conference and represents the clearest obstacle to Fairfield defending its MAAC title.
- April 11: Fairfield University men's lacrosse hosts Holy Cross at Rafferty Stadium (noon). With a 1-3 CAA record, a non-conference win here matters for overall record heading into the final stretch of league play.
- April 11: Fairfield University women's lacrosse travels to Quinnipiac (11 a.m.). The Stags will look to remain unbeaten in the MAAC with two regular season games remaining.
